Link State Routing for Network Pros

Link state routing protocols work by having each router share information about the links connected to it with neighboring routers. This allows each router to build a map of the entire network topology. Popular link state protocols include OSPF, commonly used in enterprises, and IS-IS, more common in service provider networks.

Link State Routing Protocol
Characteristics
 A Link State routing protocol communicates to other routers that are directly to it.

 It will inform its neighboring router about all the links it is connected to and the cost of the link.
Cost is determined based on the Speed of the link. c
 In addition to notifying the neighbor of its own connected Links, it will also inform the neighbor of
other routers that it is aware of and the links connected to the router.

 As this information is propagated into the network, each router is made aware of the all other
routers in the topology and the links attached to each router.

 Based on this information, each router creates a full map of the topology. A Link State Routing
Protocol has a complete view of the entire topology and calculates the best path itself. Distance
Vector Protocols would only have a view until the next hop router.
Link State Routing Protocol
Characteristics
 In the Lab Diagram, R1 will let its neighbors know that it is connected to 3 links, 192.168.1.0/24,
192.168.12.0/24 & 192.168.13.0/24 networks.

 Similarly, R2 will let its neighbor know that it is connected to 4 links. 192.168.2.0/24, 192.168.12.0/24,
192.168.23.0/24 & 192.168.24.0/24 networks.
c

 Similarly, R3 will let its neighbor know that it is connected to 3 links. 192.168.3.0/24, 192.168.13.0/24 &
192.168.23.0/24 networks.

 R4 will inform its neighbor that it is connected to 2 links, 192.168.4.0/24 & 192.168.24.0/24.

 Each router will have the same information.

 Each router will figure out the entire topology/map by looking at the common networks between the
routers.
Link State Routing Protocol
Examples
 OSPF – One of the most common implementation of a Link State Routing
Protocol. Used heavily in Enterprise environments. It is also used in the
Service Provider environments.
c
 Intermediate System – Intermediate System (IS-IS) – More popular in the
Service Provider environments. It is not used as much in the enterprise
environments.
