MAKING A PRESENTATION

• Anyone with two or three ideas can

transform those ideas into an oral
presenation. All they have to do is to
follow certain steps that help them
organize their ideas and present
them in a smooth and coherent way.
• Below are some steps of making a
presentation
• The first thing we should do to start
our presentation is to greet the
audience and then introduce the
purpose (objective, goal) of the
presentation. Here are some common
phrases that we can use to introduce
our presentation:
1-Purpose: Objective, aim, goal
When you greet your audience, choose one of the alternatives below.

Good morning/afternoon/ evening ladies and

gentlemen. Thanks for coming. My name is …….
and I am here today to give you a presentation.
. 1.The aim (but) of this presentation is to talk
about civil engineering.
2. The objective of my presentation is to explain the
concept of civil engineering.
3.The topic (theme, subject tmatter) of my
presentation is civil engineering.
4.This presentation seeks (vise à) to explain
the term civil engineering
2-Structure (plan, outline)
Once you introduce the purpose, you can move to talk about the structure
(outline) of your presentation. You can do that as is shown below:

1.This presentation falls into three parts

2.My presentation is divided into three
parts
3.This presentation is composed of four
parts
4.This presentation includes three sections
My presentation consists of three sections.
5.This presentation contains (n) sections
3. Content of each part:
The next thing to do is to introduce the content of each of the sections in your
presentation. Consider the phrases below: If you use ’part’, you have to continue using
it; again, if you use ‘section’, continue using it for the sake of consistency.

The first section/part is a definition

of civil engineering ……..
The second section/ part talks
about the functions of a civil
enginner…….
The third section/ part is concerned
with the skills of a civil
engineer…..
• For the sake of God, leave alone
• For heaven’s sake, leave me alone
• I am using simple words, for the sake of
clarity
• Useful VS Useless, no use, the meeting is
cancelled
• It’s no use crying over spilt milk
• It’s no use crying over a dead body
• It’s useless to cry over spilt milk
• It’s useless to cry over a dead body
• Birds of a feather flock together: the same
• Wings have feathers. Flock = fly in groups
• What the eye doesn’t see, the heart doesn’t
grieve over
4-Introducing each point:
Having introduced the purpose, structure and content of each of the sections or parts,
then you can start introducing each point in details. You can proceed like this.

• First, let’s start with a definition

of civil engineering …… Civil

Good morning ladies and gentlemen. Thanks
for coming. My name is ……. and I am here
today to give you a presentation. The topic of
my presentation is Marketing. This
presentation falls into three sections. The first
section is a definition of marketing. The
second section deals with the four Ps. The last
section is concerned with the four Cs, As and
Os
• First let’s start with a definition of marketing.
Marketing can be defined as selling, market
research, transportation, storage and
advertising. In other words, marketing means
the movement of goods and services from
manufacturer to customer in order to satisfy
the customer and achieve the company’s
objectives.
• Now let’s move to the four Ps. Marketing can be
divided into four main elements usually known as
the four PS, namely product, price, place and
promotion. The product element refers to the good
or service that a company wants to sell. This includes
research and development of a new product,
research of potential markets, testing the product to
ensure quality and finally introduction of the product
to the market.
• After the product element, a company next
considers the price to charge for its products
or services. There three pricing options that
the company can take, namely above the
market, with the market or below the market.
These three options are based on the average
price is established by the price leaders
• The third element of marketing is place. It means
getting the product or servcie to the customer
thorough the channels of distribution. A common
channel of distribution is: manufacturer----
wholesaler---retailer---customer. Finally
communication between the buyer and the seller is
called promotion. It takes place through personal
selling and advertising.
• The last point in this presentation is the fours
Cs, As and Os.
