Thalassaemia - Overview

 Thallassaemia is the most common single gene disorder, leading

to ineffective erythropoiesis, thus will reduce RBC shelf life.
 Public health problem
 Estimated cost of treatment from 1 year to 30 yrs old is 3 million or
100,000/year for each new cases
 Birth between 200 – 350 birth year
 Affecting mostly Malay & Chinese population & small
percentage of Indians.
 Sabah has the highest number of Thalassemia patient
 Kadazan has the highest prevalence
 Estimated 5 % of the population are carriers
