WHAT IS

WAVE?
- Waves are disturbances that travel the rough
a medium from one location to another. The
particles of the medium will move
periodically in an upward and downward
motion or forward and backward but they
will move back to their original position or
equilibrium position after the displacement.
CLASSIFICATIO
N
OF WAVES
- Waves can be classified according to their
needs of medium to carry the energy.Examples
of which are mechanical wave and
electromagnetic wave.They can also be
classified as either longitudinal wave or
transverse wave depending on the direction of
the particles and the energy associated with
it.Other types of waves are also presented in
this section.
- The slinky is one of the physics toys that are
used to demonstrate waves. We can see the
disturbance passing through the slinky from one
end to the other. The first coil is disturbed and
instigates to push or pull on the succeeding coil.
A medium is a material that transmits the
wave. The medium of the wave carries the wave
from one point to another. In the figure, the
medium is the slinky coils.
- Waves are energy
carries.As a disturbance
moves through a medium
from one particle to its
adjacent particle,energy is
being transported from one
end of the medium to the
other.
- When you disturb the slinky, energy
transported from you to the first coil of
the slinky. While the first coil is diturbing
the second coil adjacent to it,the first coil
is transporting energy to the second
coil.This phenomenon continues until the
energy reaches the end.

WAVES
TRANSVERSE WAVE
- When the constituent parts of the medium are
disturbed in a direction which is perpendicular to the
direction of energy transfer,it is called a transverse
wave.Transverse wave csn be depicted on horizontally
stretched rope by oscillating up and down.
Parts of Transverse
Wave
CREST
- The highest point in a
wave.
TROUGH
- The lowest point in a
wave.
Amplitude
- The maximum displacement
of the particle in the medium
from equilibrium position.
Wavelength
- is the length of one complete
cycle.
LONGITUDINAL WAVE
- Is a wave in which the particles of the
medium are disturbed in the direction
parallel to the direction of energy
transfer. It is formed when a horizontal
spring is caused to vibrate forward and
backward.

LONGITUDINA
L WAVE
COMPRESSION
- Is a place ona longitudinal wave
depicting the greatest density.This is
where the paricles of the medium are
compressed.
RAREFACTION
- Is a place ona longitudinal wave
depicting the greatest density.This is
where the paricles of the medium are
stretched apart.
MECHANICAL WAVE
- Mechanical waves require a
material medium to
travel.Mechanical waves are formed
by disturbing any object in
equilibrium position.A sound wave is
an example of a mechanical wave.
SOUND WAVE
- sound is an example of a longitudinal
wave. The particle’s direction is parallel to the
direction of energy propaganda.It sound
waves, compressions are regions of higher air
presure and rarefaction are regions with air
presure.
