WHAT IS CONGRUENCE
● 2 objects of the exact same shape and size are said to be congruent
● Congruent objects are the exact copies of each other
CONGRUENCE OF PLANE FIGURES
● 2 plane figures are said to be congruent if they can be exactly super positioned on
each other (if u trace a copy of one and place it exactly on top of the other, the 2
figures cover each other completely)
CONGRUENCE AMONG LINE SEGMENTS
● If two line segments have the same (i.e., equal) length, they are congruent.
● Also, if two line segments are congruent, they have the same length.
● when two line segments are congruent, we sometimes just say that the line segments
are equal; and we also write AB = CD. (What we actually mean is AB ≅CD).
CONGRUENCE OF ANGLES
● If two angles have the same measure, they are congruent.
● Also, if two angles are congruent, their measures are same.
CONGRUENCE OF TRIANGLES
● Two triangles are congruent if they are copies of each other and when superposed,
they cover each other exactly.
● ΔABC and ΔPQR have the same size and shape. They are congruent. So, we would
express this as ΔABC ≅ ΔPQR
● Corresponding vertices : A and P, B and Q, C and R.
● Corresponding sides : AB and PQ, BC and QR , AC and PR .
● Corresponding angles : ∠A and ∠P, ∠B and ∠Q, ∠C and ∠R.
If ∆ABC and ∆DBC are on the same base BC, AB = DC
and AC = DB (Fig. 6.21), then which of the following
gives a congruence
relationship?

(a) ∆ ABC ≅ ∆ DBC (b) ∆ ABC ≅ ∆CBD

(c) ∆ ABC ≅ ∆ DCB (d) ∆ ABC ≅ ∆BCD
