PROTECTING CHILDREN AGAINST

ONLINE PREDATORS

Matthew D. Krueger
United States Attorney
Eastern District of Wisconsin
POTENTIAL DANGERS TO WATCH FOR

 Adults, usually posing as children, will make casual contact with children to:

 Gain their trust, and introduce sexual conversations over time.

 Next they will try to coerce children/victims into providing sexually explicit images or videos of
themselves. Many times they will promise victims gifts or money.

 Once your children have sent sexually explicit images or videos, offenders threaten to post their
images publicly or send the images to victims’ friends and family.

 Offenders do this to ensure that more photos and videos will be sent and to get their victims to
comply with their online sexual demands.
PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN

 Discuss Internet safety with children of all ages.

 Explain that images posted online will stay on the Internet permanently.
 Set privacy settings to the strictest level possible for online gaming systems
and electronic devices.
 Keep electronic devices in an open, common room of the house. Do not
permit online access in a closed room.
 Frequently check your children’s online activity, profiles, and postings.
Prevent your children from deleting their online activity.

PARENTS MAKE SURE CHILDREN KNOW THAT ANYONE WHO ASKS A CHILD TO ENGAGE IN SEXUALLY EXPLICIT ACTIVITY ONLINE SHOULD BE
REPORTED TO A PARENT, GUARDIAN, OR OTHER TRUSTED ADULT AND LAW ENFORCEMENT.

REMEMBER THAT VICTIMS SHOULD NOT BE AFRAID TO TELL LAW ENFORCEMENT IF THEY ARE BEING SEXUALLY EXPLOITED. IT IS NOT A CRIME
FOR A CHILD TO SEND SEXUALLY EXPLICIT IMAGES TO SOMEONE IF THEY ARE COMPELLED OR COERCED TO DO SO.
