PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Lesson Objective: Understand how plants need carbon dioxide, water and
light for photosynthesis.
.
TO MAKE WITH

PHOTOSYNTHESIS

LIGHT
So, photosynthesis means to make with light
EQUATION FOR PHOTOSYNTHESIS
• Photosynthesis is the way that plants create food.
• They take in carbon dioxide from the air and water
from the soil.
• They use the carbon dioxide and water to make
glucose and oxygen.
• So, the equation for photosynthesis is –

Carbon Dioxide + Water  Glucose + Oxygen

• Energy is required to make this reaction happen,

this energy come from sunlight.
STRUCTURE OF A PLANT CELL
STRUCTURES OF A PLANT CELL
• Cytoplasm – jelly like substance where all
reactions take place.
• Nucleus – controls all reactions in the cell
• Cell membrane – control entry and exit of
substances in and out of cell.
• Cell wall – made up of cellulose, helps the plant
cell maintain it’s shape.
• Permanent Vacuole – storage of food
• Mitochondria – provides energy
• Chloroplast – contains a green pigment called
chlorophyll which helps in photosynthesis.
PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND ENERGY
Chloroplast contains chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is the
green pigment which absorbs energy from sunlight to
make glucose.

Glucose is a storage of chemical energy.

So, during photosynthesis, energy is converted from

light energy to chemical energy.
STORING CARBOHYDRATES
Glucose is a carbohydrate

Plants do not store carbohydrates in the form of

glucose because they are soluble in water.

Instead plants store carbohydrates in the form of

starch.

Starch is a better option than glucose because it is

insoluble in water.
