What is online learning?
Online learning is education that takes place over the Internet. It is
often referred to as “e-learning”.
Distance learning is any learning that takes place across distance and
not in a traditional classroom and has several types available today,
including:
• Correspondence Courses: conducted through regular mail with little interaction.
• Telecourses: where content is delivered via radio or television broadcast.
• CD-ROM Courses: where the student interacts with static computer content.
• Online Learning: Internet-based courses offered synchronously and/or
asynchronously.
• Mobile Learning: Learning by means of devices such as cellular phones, PDAs and
digital audio players (iPods, MP3 players).

Learning Management System
A learning management system is a software application, a web
based system or a platform for the administration, documentation,
tracking, reporting, automation and delivery of educational
courses, training programs, or learning and development programs.
• Popular for-profit LMS/CMS include:
• Blackboard (www.blackboard.com)
• WebCT (www.webct.com)
• eCollege (www.ecollege.com)
• Edmodo(www.Edmodo.com)
• Low cost alternative and open source LMS:
• ETUDES-NG (http://etudesproject.org)
• Moodle (http://moodle.org)
• Angel (http://angellearning.com)
The most common tools offered by LMS include:
• Schedule For posting and viewing deadlines, events, etc.
• Announcements For posting current information to all
students.
• Syllabus For creating and posting the course syllabus.
• Modules For publishing and viewing course content in
sections.
• Assignments For posting, submitting, and grading student
work.
• Discussion Board For asynchronous discussions, group work, and
collaboration.
• Private Messages For private communication between students
and/or the instructor.
• Chat For real-time, synchronous conversation in written form.
• Tests & Quizzes For authoring and administering exams, quizzes,
surveys, etc.
• Gradebook For posting and managing student grades.
What is Schoology?
Schoology is a social networking
service and virtual learning
environment for K-12 school and
higher education institutions that
allows users to create, manage, and
share academic content.
History
• The Schoology platform was founded by Jeremy Friedman, Ryan Hwang and Tim
Trinidad while still undergraduates at Washington University in St. Louis, MO.
• Originally designed for sharing notes and Schoology was released commercially
in August 2009. Schoology secured its first institutional round of venture capital
funding of $1.25M from Meakem Becker Venture Capital in June, 2010,
following an angel investment in 2009 from an unnamed investor
• As of October 2010 the service had more than 2,400 schools nationwide in its
system and had plans to build out interactive content that teachers can use to
support course materials and provide more access to parents.
• Enhancements have included text message notifications, mobile apps for iOS
and Android, integration with Google Drive and other services, a shared
resources library, and a question importer for tests and quizzes. As of October
2019 it was reported that the service is used in over 60,000 schools
Services
• The service includes attendance records, online gradebook, tests and
quizzes, and homework drop boxes. The social media features facilitate
collaboration among a class, a group, or a school.
• The system can be integrated with existing school reporting and information
systems and also provides the security, filters and support that school
districts require.
• The basic product is offered to individuals, schools and districts free of
charge. Revenue comes from premium add-ons such as customized
branding, support packages, increased storage, single sign on, and data
integration with existing student information systems (SIS).
• Schoology has partnered with other learning services such as McGraw-Hill
Education and National Geographic Society Cengage.
