INTRODUCTION TO

PHILOSOPHY
WHAT DO I REALLY
WANT IN LIFE?

WHAT MAKES ME
HAPPY AND FEELING
FULFILLED?
oPeople keep busy groping for some
answers what they think can satisfy
them.

oSome people believe that their

goals, dreams and ambitions can
shape one to be happy. And indeed
they are..
WHAT IS MAN?
WHY SHOULD WE
INSIST THAT MAN
SHOULD LIVE A
MEANINGFUL LIFE?
TO FIND THE MEANING OF
LIFE IS TO SHAPE ONE’S
LIFE…
BRANCHES OF
PHILOSOPHY
LOGIC
o It is considered the first
branch. Logic is a science of
correct reasoning.
 Definitely, before we can
come to the knowledge of the
different areas of concern, we
need to look into, first, our
way of rationalizing(to find
ways)?
The belief that the reason
and experience and not
emotions or religious beliefs
should be the basis for your
actions, opinions, etc.?
 Is our reasoning is correct
and valid?

 Does my reasoning
observe certain degree of
logic?
PHILOSOPHY OF
MAN
o The body of man is
considered the closest object
to the thinking person – man.
His curiosity begins with the
reality that he exists. His
existence is his deepest
 Why do I exist?

 Why man exists and why

man dies?
COSMOLOGY
oThe next object that is
closer to man are those
things that clutter around
him. These are lifeless
beings yet meaningful to
man’s search for meaning.
COSMOLOGY
o Is a science of inanimate
objects. Though lifeless
they seem to be but they
also contribute a lot to
man’s primary concern.
METAPHYSICS
o Opposite to material
things are the intelligible
matters. These are realities
that are not visible to our
naked eyes – that only the
mind can see.
METAPHYSICS
o Is a science that studies
the nature of being. The
word meta means beyond
= outside universe – is the
study of origin.
 Why we are here?

What is our purpose in

life?
 ETHICS
o Man is not only an
individual person. He is
also a social being – a man
for others.
 ETHICS
o Our relationship with
other human beings are
ruled by some moral
principles in order to
maintain harmonious
relationship with them.
 ETHICS
o Is a science that studies
the morality of human act.
Morality concerns the
rightness or the wrongness
of an act.
AESTHETICS
o This is a science that
studies the concept of
beauty.
 How do we define
beauty?

How can we classify that

an object is beautiful?
 What could be the basis
of our judgment that the
object is beautiful?
 PSYCHOLOGY
o The word comes from
the two Latin words
“psyche” which means
mind and “logos” means
study.
 PSYCHOLOGY
o To combine the two
words together, it means
the science of the mind. But
to consider the nominal
definition of psychology, it
is the science of human
 EPISTEMOLOGY
o This branch is a branch
closer to logic. Episteme is
a Latin word which means
theory of knowledge.
 What is knowledge?
 What do people know?
 How do you know that
you know?
 Is human knowledge
trustworthy?
 Can our senses be
trusted?
 Difference between
opinion, knowledge and
wisdom?
 SOCIAL
PHILOSOPHY
o As just mentioned a while
ago, man is a social being.
Man is viewed as a member
of any institution essential
to his growth.
 SOCIAL
PHILOSOPHY
o Primarily those
institutions are the family,
church, school and society
in general that mold him to
be the kind of person he is.
THEODICY

o One of the most striking

questions of man is to know
the origin of all things.
Is there God
Is God really exists?
Can you prove that there
is God?
 When we look around
the universe at things not
made by man, what do we
see?
 Why God permits evil?
 And I…..
