Operations scheduling

Scheduling relates to use of equipment , scheduling of human activities and receipt

of materials

Its objectives seek trade off between efficient utilization of labor and equipment, lead
time, inventory levels, and processing

Advent of lean manufacturing and JIT has put more importance on operations
scheduling on aspects such as:
-job scheduling (thru simulations)
-floor shop scheduling (multi stage jobs in mass production)
-job shop scheduling (batch production)

Drop in inventory drive has resulted in increased replenishment frequency

Manufacturing resource planning:
Flow of materials
 Raw materials flow into manufacturing company.

 Finished goods distributed to end customers.

 Supply chain management (SCM) is the study of this Linked Chain of

Activities.

 Manufacturing Resource Planning (or Materials Management) is the

Study of the Planning and Materials Flow.

Manufacturing Resource Planning
Criteria

 High Customer Service (Probability of Meeting

Demand)
 Minimize Production Costs
 Minimize Inventory Holding Costs and Other
Inventory Investment Costs – Avoid Shortages
 Minimize Distribution Costs
These objectives often conflict with objectives of
marketing and finance.
Loading
Loading involves assigning jobs to work centers.

Need to minimize processing/ set up time, as well as idle time and through
put time

Infinite loading / finite loading.

Sequencing
 Concerned with determined the order in which jobs are processed at
individual work stations, across work centers

 Processing order is key if it comes to cost of waiting and idle time at work
centers

 Some rules applied are random(R), first come first/first served(FC/FS),

shortest processing time (SPT), earliest due date(EDD), critical ratio(CR),
least work remaining(LWR), fewest operations remaining (FOR), slack time
(ST), slack time per operation (ST/O), next queue (NQ), least setup (LSU)
Gantt charts
 Use of visual aid for loading and scheduling
 Load charts to deplay loading and idle times
for machines and departments
 Monitor job progress tracking
