Introduction

Differentiation between episcleritis and scleritis is important

for the diagnosis and management. The clinical course
and visual prognosis may be different.

Differentiation between the 2 forms of inflammation, scleritis

and episcleritis, could be guided by obtaining careful history
and performing appropriate clinical examinations.
Introduction
there are limited methods for differentiating one from the other

The aim of this study is to use a noninvasive diagnostic test

by OCT to differentiate between scleritis and episcleritis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS

A total of 30 eyes of consecutive patients were included,

had the clinical diagnosis of unilateral scleral or episcleral

01 inflammation

period from June 2012 to December 2013 at King Khaled Eye Specialist
Hospital (I.K.)
02
ANOVA test was used to compare the groups of eyes.
03
Statistical significance was defined as a P value of less than
0.05

Discussion

Spectral-domain OCT
Conclusion

Patients with active anterior scleritis showed

increased thickness of the sclera and presence of
intrascleral hyporeflective areas of edema by OCT
compared to patients with episcleritis and normal
eyes.
