CHAPTER 5

PROGRESSIONS
• A progression is a sequence of numbers that is
occurring in a particular repeated pattern
• There are two types of progression
 Arithmetic progression
 Geometric progression
Arithmetic Progression
•   and are three consecutive terms in an arithmetic
Let,
progression
is the term, where,
So, , and
Arithmetic progression is a sequence of numbers where
the difference between consecutive terms is a constant.
(Common difference)
Common difference, is the difference between any
consecutive terms in the sequence.

where,
Since is a constant
Therefore, .
•
Determine whether each of the following sequences is
an arithmetic progression.

The th Term of Arithmetic Progression,
•In  an arithmetic progression
is the first term
is the common difference
is the th term

Thus, to find the th term,

straight line . The diameter of the smallest circle is cm. The
diameter of the semicircle increases by cm.
a) Find the perimeter of the first three semicircles and show
that the perimeter form an arithmetic progression.
b) If , find the semicircle which has a perimeter of cm
