Let’s Take it from the Top…

Music that we listen to uses the same series of

notes. In most music you will listen to, there will
only be 8 notes used. This is called a Scale.
Not all of the music we listen to uses
exactly the same 8 notes …
To find which 8 notes are used in
each scale, you will need to
remember a pattern…
A TONE is 2 jumps on a piano (including black
notes), or moving up 2 frets on a guitar.

A SEMITONE is 1 jump on a piano, or moving

up 1 fret on a guitar.
! VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION !

On the Piano, when working out tones or

semitones, you count the number of
moves you make to get from one note to
another
How many jumps to get from C up to F#?
! VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION !

Magic Circle …

… this is awesome
Draw a Big Circle
Divide it in half
And Again
Now each quarter into 3…
You should have 12 Segments
Why should you should have 12 Segments?
Each segment in your Magic circle
represents each note used in
music, all the letters from A-G and
the sharps and flats…
We’re going to put the notes in, in the same
order that they would appear on the piano.

D# Start with a
Eb E pair
D
F of white notes
C# that are a
Db F# semitone apart
Gb
… there are
C G only 2 pairs
that are a
semitone
G#
B A# Ab apart…
Bb A
! VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION !
