Parallel operation of Synchronous Generators:

 Nowadays it is rare in an electrical system that any

synchronous generator providing power to its loads lonely.
This happens only in emergency generator.

 In parallel operation there are two or more generators

connected in parallel.
Advantages of generators operating in parallel:

Bigger load.
High Reliability.
Preventive Maintenance.
High Efficiency.
The operating cost is reduced.
Conditions required for paralleling operation:

 RMS line voltages of the both generators have to be same.

 The two generators must have the

Same phase sequence.

 The phase angles of two similar

phases should be equal.

 The frequency of the oncoming generator must be little bit higher than
the running generator.
General procedure for paralleling generators:
 The figure shows
a synchronous generator(G2) being
paralleled with a running power
system (G1) and supplying power
to a load. G2 is parallel with
the help of a switch ,S1.The following
Steps should be taken to accomplish
the paralleling-

 To make the terminal voltages equal.

 To check the phase sequence of the machines. There are three methods to check the phase
sequence-
 Synchroscope method.
 Induction motor method.
 Three bulb method.

 To check and verify the incoming and running system frequency.
