– Whole structure is strengthened

90 mm

25 / Caterpillar Confidential: GREEN / WHEREVER THERE’S MINING

Closed Loop Swing Circuit

• Closed system incl. torque control

– balance valve controls the swing pumps against the pressure
in the swing circuit
 Only the minimal necessary oil flow is utilized at any time
 Saves energy during acceleration

• Braking of the swing motion by counteracting control

 Saves energy during breaking
– On open systems, the entire kinetic energy has to be
decelerated by throttle valves
Energy balance (closed-loop)
 Wastes energy
max without achieving max swing speed
 Created heat has to be cooled down

consumed
• Swing circuit has priority over main circuit

Swing energy
• Energy recovery during braking Deceleration
– The swing motors act like a pump driven by the kinetic 0
energy of superstructure, attachment and payload Acceleration

generated
– The swing pumps act like a motor and feed the energy
back to the system via the pump transfer gear

Engine Module

• Twin engine concept

– Fully operational with only one
engine running
• The fuel tanks are bolted to the
module frame
– Easy repair or replacement in case
of accidental damage
• Total fuel Capacity: 7800 liter

 Consumption & Refueling times (15 % fuel left in tank):

• @ 65 % load factor  232.3 l/h  (28.5 hours)
• @ 70 % load factor  250.2 l/h  (26.5 hours)
• @ 75 % load factor  268.0 l/h  (24.7 hours)
• @ 80 % load factor  285.9 l/h  (23.2 hours)
• @ 85 % load factor  303.8 l/h  (21.8 hours)

31 / Caterpillar Confidential: GREEN / WHEREVER THERE’S MINING

Twin Engine Concept Advantages

• Our HMS is fully operational with one engine down

– Very important safety feature as machine can be moved away from high walls
– Machine can be moved to allow for blasting
– Machine can be moved to a better repair position/location
• About 65% of full production will be achieved with only one engine running,
due to
– Max working pressure (i.e. max digging forces) will also be achieved with only
one engine running
– Pressure free lowering of attachment
– Closed loop swing circuit with energy recuperation
• Trouble shooting of the power module is much easier
– You can easily compare drive trains
• Smaller components have to be stored as spare parts
– e.g. 1 small pump transfer gear instead of 1 large unit

32 / Caterpillar Confidential: GREEN / WHEREVER THERE’S MINING

Counterweight

• Engine radiators mounted in

counterweight
• Fan drive hydraulically driven
• Fan speed electronically controlled
depending on demand
– Energy saving and longer lifetime of
components
– Fans run at full speed in case of
electrical fault
• Fans are easy accessible
