THE ATOMIC MODELS

What is Thomson Model ?

 Thomson was one of the firsts who

theorized a possible arrangement of the
subatomic particles. He proposed that the
atom is a mass of positive charges with the
electrons scattered as far apart as possible.
 the atom is composed of electrons
surrounded by a soup of positive charge to
balance the electrons' negative charges,
like negatively charged “plums” surrounded
by positively charged “pudding”.
Who Proposed the Thomson Model ?

 In 1900,
William Thomson (Lord
Kelvin) is the one who
proposed the Thomson
model and strongly
supported by Sir Joseph
John Thomson, who had
discovered (1897) the
electron, a negatively
charged part of every
atom.
Ernest Rutherford

 Worked at the Manchester

University in early 1900’s

 In 1908, He won the Nobel

prize in chemistry

 In 1911, He is a British
physicist and carried out the
famous gold foil experiment,
He did this in order to
understand the structure of an
atom.
The Gold Foil Experiment
Along with
Hans Geiger
and Ernest
Marsden,
Rutherford
fired alpha
particles at a
thin piece of
gold foil.
 They discovered that most of the particles
travelled straight to the foil, but a few
returned on the same side that they came
from. The alpha particles had run into
concentrations of positive charge and were
repelled. Thus proving that in the center of the
atom was a dense, positively charged “ball”.(The
nucleus)
