Defn :
An AP is a sequence of numbers where each term after
the fist is formed by adding a fixed constant.

The fixed constant is called the common difference

and it is denoted by the letter d .

Cont’d

In general, if the first term of an AP is a and the common

difference of successive terms is d then
• the sequence of an AP is
a,(a  d),(a  2d),(a  3d),(a  4d), ..
• the n th term is a  (n - 1)d
• an AP with n terms can be written as follows
a,(a  d),(a  2d),(a  3d), .,[a  (n-1 )d].

12,-6, 3,.
• Successive terms of the sequence are found by multiplying the
previous term by a common ratio.
• The sequence 1,3,9,27,81, ..can be written as
1, (1 3), (3  3), (9  3), (27  3),
The common ratio is 3 (divide a term by the previous term)
and the sequence 12,-6, 3,.can be written as
12, (12   1 2 ), (-6   1 2 ),...............

A GP is a sequence of numbers where

each term after the first is found by
multiplying the previous by a fixed
constant.
The fixed constant is called the common
ratio and it is represented by the letter r.
