IMPORTANCE OF WATER-II

INTRODUCTION
 Which property of water makes it a
universal solvent?
 What is the importance of high specific
heat of water?
 Difference between cohesion and adhesion?
 Difference between polar and non-polar
covalent bond
CONTENTS
 Properties of Water

High heat of vaporization

Ionization

Lower Density of Ice

PROPERTIES OF WATER
HIGH HEAT OF VAPORIZATION

 Amount of heat required to convert a

unit mass of a liquid into gaseous form

 Represented as number of calories

absorbed per gram vaporised i.e. 574

calories per gram in case of water

PROPERTIES OF WATER
HIGH HEAT OF VAPORIZATION
 High heat of vaporization means a large amount of

heat can be lost with a minimal loss of water from the

body

 It gives animals an efficient way to release access body

heat in hot environment

 When an animal sweats, body heat is used to vaporise

the sweat thus cooling the animal

PROPERTIES OF WATER
HIGH HEAT OF VAPORIZATION

 Due to this property of water

 Evaporation of only 2ml of 1 litter of

water lowers the temperature of the

remaining 998 ml water by 1oC

PROPERTIES OF WATER
HYDROPHOIC EXCLUSION

 Defined as reduction of the contact area

between water and hydrophobic substances

placed in water

 For example, if you place few drops of oil on

the surface of the water solution, the oil drops

will tend to coalesce into a single drop

PROPERTIES OF WATER
HYDROPHOIC EXCLUSION

 Biologically, hydrophobic exclusion

plays key role in maintaining the

integrity of lipid bilayer membrane

PROPERTIES OF WATER
IONIZATION

 Association of Molecules into ions

 When water molecule ionizes:

 It releases an equal number of positive

hydrogen and negative hydroxyl ions

 Reaction is reversible, equilibrium is

maintained at 250C
PROPERTIES OF WATER
IONIZATION

 The H +ve and OH-ve ions affect and

take part in many of the reactions that

occur in self e.g.

 It helps to maintain or change the pH

of the medium
PROPERTIES OF WATER
PROPERTIES OF WATER
LOWER DENSITY OF ICE

 Ice floats on water

 This is because ice is less dense than water

 Ice has a giant structure and show maximum

number of hydrogen bonding among water

molecules

 Hence they are arranged like a lattice

PROPERTIES OF WATER
LOWER DENSITY OF ICE

 In freezing weather, ice formed on the ponds

and lakes forming an insulating layer above

the water below

 This provides a living environment for some

organisms until the ice melts

 Organism can also live under the ice
