INTRODUCTION

The AutoCAD Civil 3D user interface enhances the standard AutoCAD

environment with additional tools for creating and managing civil design
information. Standard AutoCAD features, such as the command line and
ribbon, work the same way in AutoCAD Civil 3D as they do in AutoCAD.
Autocad civil 3D is a vertical solution of Autocad

AutoCAD Civil 3D software is a Building Information Modeling (BIM)

solution for civil engineering design and documentation. Civil 3D is
a software for civil engineers, drafters, designers working on
transportation, land development, and water projects
.
. AutoCAD Civil 3D is the most powerful civil engineering and
survey software. Civil 3D has the ability to quickly calculate the
quantities of materials to be estimated such as concrete, bricks,
cement, etc. With the help of Civil 3D, project visualization, analysis
and designing becomes quite easy.

Above image is the screen shot of the Auto Cad Civil . There are different
types of tools and toolbars in this interface.
Detail of the user interface toolbars is as follows:

1. Quick access tool bar

2. Ribbon

DESIGN STEPS
DESIGN STEPS
1. SURFACE
2. ALIGNMENT
3. PROFILE
4. ASSEMBLY
5. CORRIDOR
6. SAMPLE LINE
7. SECTIONS
8. QUANTITY T/OFF
9. PLOT
1. Surface :

Surfaces. are the most basic and necessary

element of any project. Surface is must before
creating any road, pipe network, etc
1.1. To create Surface,
click home tab>surfaces menu>create surface
1.2 Modify tab>surfaces menu>Add data>create
surface from contours
1.3. On command prompt: Type All
: 2. Alignments
2. Alignment
Alignments are basically the series of coordinates, lines and curves
used to represent the centerline of roads, sidewalk, etc. Alignments
can also be used to represent the centerline of a channel or stream.
2.1. To create alignments click Home tab>create design panel
>Alignment menu bar>Alignment creation tools.
2.2. Window will open change the design speed and select criteria
base design press ok
2.3 From alignment creation tools select tangent with curve and
draw lines for your geometry
2.4 from alignment creation tools select grids and change the length
of the curve if required
3. Profile
3. Profile
A profile is used to represent terrain data along a horizontal alignment. Data points are
generated wherever the alignment intersects a surface line. The profile view is the
Civil3D grid object that shows the profile data. After you create an alignment, the next
step in the road design process is to generate the surface profile.
3.1. To create Profile, click Home tab>create design panel >Profile menu bar>Create
surface profile.
3.1.1. locate it just below the alignment window
3.2. Now create Finished Road Profile, click Home tab>create design panel >Profile
menu bar>Profile creation tools.
3.3. Window will open change the design speed and select criteria base design press ok
3.4 From profile creation tools select tangent with curve and draw lines for your
geometry
3.5. from Profile creation tools select grids and change the length of the curve if
required
Assembly:
4. Assembly:
Assembly basically represents the typical section and is the starting
point for corridor design. To create the assembly you add subassembly
like lanes, curbs, shoulders and other cross section elements.
4.1. To create ASSEMBLY, click Home tab>create design panel
>Assembly menu bar>Create Assembly.
4.2. Window will open select following
-Your Alignment
-Profile
-Section type
-Name your Assembly
Continued ……………..
4. Assembly continued :
4.3. From tool palettes select basic lane, click on the icon and
change the properties such as lane width, depth of different layers
of pavement section and then paste it on the window
4.4. Now select shoulder extended all , from tool palettes click on
the icon and change the properties such as sholulder width, slope
depth of different layers of pavement section and then paste on the
right and left side respectively of the lane created in 4.3. it, on the
window
4.5 Select daylight general (embankment-common name) from tool
palettes click on the icon and change the properties such as slope
and then paste on the left and right side respectively at the end of
shoulders created in 4.4. it, on the window
Corridor :
.
5. Corridor :
A corridor model is a three-dimensional representation of the design
for a roadway or any transportation design. For creating any corridor
you must have an alignment, a layout profile and an assembly
To create corridor, click Home tab>create design panel >Corridor.
Here three corridor must be created
5.1. Corridor for original surface
5.2. Corridor for Road surface
5.3. Rebuild corridor after adding boundaries
continued ……………..
Corridor surface:

We can create surface from corridor, actually corridor surface is our

output and this surface is directly linked to corridor if make a change in
corridor ,corridor surface will also change.

To create Profile, Click corridor tab>Modify corridor panel>corridor

surface.
5.1. Corridor for original surface
5.1. Corridor for original surface
To create corridor, click Home tab>create design panel >Corridor.
Window will open, select alignment, then first surface(Ground
level) and press ok.
You can also see your corridor by first zooming your plan, then
right clicking and therafter selecting object view and select any
isometric view

continued ……………..
5.2. Corridor for Road surface
5.2. Corridor for road surface
To create corridor, click Home tab>create design panel >Corridor.
Window will open, select alignment, then second surface(Road
level) and press ok.
Again You can also see your corridor by first zooming your plan,
then right clicking and therafter selecting object view and select
any isometric view

continued ……………..
5.3. Rebuild corridor after adding
boundaries

5.3.1. Now from prospector on the left hand side of your civil 3d
window, select corridor(5.2), then click right to get properties, A
window will open
5.3.2. From the window, select surface tab, add a surface, there is
window where you select surface add “datum” and then from the
over hang column change to “Toplinks”
5.3.3. Now select boundary menu right click the corridor surface
and add daylight
5.3.4. Close
5.3.5. Rebuild the corridor by selecting it from the prospector
6. Sample lines:
6. Sample lines
Sample lines are required to calculate section views ,sample
lines are created on alignments at a different stations
6.1. To create sample lines, click Home tab > profile &
section views > sample lines .
6.2. In the open window add all types of corridors, click
Apply.
6.2.1 As a result another menu will open from which we
select “sample line source and will change/set interval of
sample lines
Continued ……
6. Sample lines continued
6.3. from menu now select range of stations modify
window if felt necessary close and then right click any
where on the 3d window to get rid of select station
requirement from command window
6.4. Now zoom the alignment window to verify the
sample line present on your corridor
7. Cross Sections
7. Section views :
Section views are the objects which we can show in in grids that shows all
information of section. It is associated with geometry or location of sample
lines ,if we change in location of sample lines or geometry section views are
change automatically
7.1. To create Section views ,Click on home tab>profile & section
views>section views >create section views
7.2. Right click section/sample line will result in opening of section editor on
main menu, then select layout such as by selecting horizontal view port and
having two views, view 1-plan and view 2-section
7.3. As a result you can see all sections one by one by selecting the station
window opened in main menu of section editor
8. Quantity Takeoff
8.1. From analyse window select compute material a window will
open
8.2. First add new material
8.3. On the top of menu select “surface as ground surface ” press
“+” then also add “surface as Road surface ” press “+”
8.4. Now on the column we need to select material as earthwork
8.5. Specify ground surface as ” base “ and then also Road
surface as “compare”
8.6 again press add new material
Continued….
8. Quantity Takeoff
8.7. On the top of menu select “surface as corridor ” press “+”
then also select “surface as Pave 1 ” press “+” , from list of menu
available
8.8. Now on the column we need to select material as Structure
8.9. Specify Pave 1 surface as “ include ” will automatically be
displayed
8.10 repeat step 8.7 to add “surface as Pave 2 and Base and sub
base respectively and by pressing “+” each time
8.11 Press ok and close the window
8.12 Now from analyse menu compute material and draw
mass haul diagram by following the routine steps.
