BARTHES SEMIOTIC CODES

• Symbolic codes: -images representing something else


– eg: heart -> love; bats -> vampire
• Semantic codes: -parts of a product with a hidden meaning
– eg: colours red and black -> horror, blood, death;

• Proairetic/Action codes: -elements of a product signifying something is going to happen as a result


– eg: pulling out a gun -> shooting with it/ killing somebody

• Hermeneutic/Enigma codes: -mysterious part of a product making the reader wants to go on


– eg: “ Tide’s got what women want!” -> reader asks herself what it is what women want

• Cultural/Referential codes: -parts of a product you are only going to understand if you are part of a
