 One of the greatest challenges that a health
professional faces is the correct
communication of ideas
 Its very important for physicians,
researchers, clinical staff members and
patiens to understand one another
 The set of terms that are used to describe
the location of a body structure relative to
another is directional terminology
 It is a valuable tool in anatomy because it
abbreviates otherwise length describtion of
body part
 The universally accepted position of the body
that is used as part of directional
terminology is know as the anatomical
position
 The anatomycal position is describes a body
standing erect (upright) facing with the arm
the observer arms at the sides and the toes
and palms turned forward (pic-1)
 This position can describes much like
direction key on a map pointing north, soth,
east & west (pic-2)
 The major of areas of body that are
structurally distinguish able are called
regions
 They include: the head, the neck, the
trunk, upper extremity and lower
extremity
 For example: the anterior side of trunk
divided into uper portion, the thorax, a
midle portion,the abdomen and lower
portion is pelvis. The posterior side of
trunk is called back
 The human body is divided into regions.
Some regions contain spaces called
cavities that house organs.
