Read the sentences
1. Flash is horse. It was brought from Mexico.
2. Flash is a horse that was brought from Mexico.
Here the underlined word is a noun. The clauses describe the
noun Flash. Like adjectives, the describe the nouns or give
additional information about the nouns. Hence they are called
adjectives clauses.
1. Flash belongs to Joe. He is the businessman.
2. Flash belongs to Joe who is a businessman.

Adjective clauses begin with relative pronouns ---who,


whom, whose, which and that.
Using Object Pronouns: who(m), which, that

Adjective clauses with relative pronouns
• 1. The boy who was tall.
• 2. The doctor whom we met.
• 3. The woman whose purse was stolen.

• 4. The dog which wore a red collar.

Adjective clauses are also called relative pronoun.


Remember
• Some relative clauses define or provide essential information about
the noun they precede. In such cases no comma is used to separate
them from the main clause.
Example: The girl who is wearing red T- shirt is my sister.
Watch out!
• The adjective clause should be placed as close as possible to the
noun it describes:
• The antecedent: The noun that an adjective clause describes is
called the antecedent
Example
• 1. The tiger that was hurt has been taken to the hospital.(Correct)

• 1. The Tiger has been taken to the hospital that was hurt.(Wrong)
• If the subject of the adjective clause
• Is a person, use who or whom.
• Is a thing or an animal, use which or that.
• Is a place, use where.
Use who for subject nouns and whom for object
nouns.
Example: Riyan, who is standing on the left, is a
singer.
Riyan is the singer whom everyone likes.
