FORMING QUESTIONS OF JESUS

11
While He was on the way to Jerusalem, He was passing between
Samaria and Galilee. 12 As He entered a village, ten leprous men who
stood at a distance met Him; 13 and they raised their voices, saying,
“Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” 14 When He saw them, He said to
them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they were going,
they were cleansed. 15 Now one of them, when he saw that he had been
healed, turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice, 16 and he fell on his
face at His feet, giving thanks to Him. And he was a Samaritan. 17 Then
Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed?
But the nine—where are they? 18 Was no one found who
returned to give glory to God, except this foreigner?” 19 And He said to
him, “Stand up and go; your faith has made you well.”

Jesus and his disciples are on the move. Since John
9:51, Jesus has moved the focus of his ministry south
from Galilee, getting closer and closer to the final
confrontation in Jerusalem. Here Jesus is traveling in
the border area at the south extremity of the province
of Galilee, and at the north end of the area where the
Samaritans lived. The storyteller reminds us that this
took place in a racially-mixed area.

WHAT IS LEPROSY
Leprosy in Biblical times was a terrible thing. The
Greek word is lepra which means,
“to peel off in scales.”
We're not exactly sure what Biblical leprosy was.
While it may have described what is known today as
"Hansen's Disease," the word probably included other
skin diseases, as well.
According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
“Hansen’s disease (also known as leprosy) is an
infection caused by slow-growing bacteria called
Mycobacterium leprae. It can affect the nerves, skin,
eyes, and lining of the nose (nasal mucosa). With
early diagnosis and treatment, the disease can be
cured. People with Hansen’s disease can continue to
work and lead an active life during and after
treatment.
According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Leprosy was once feared as a highly contagious and

devastating disease, but now we know it doesn’t
spread easily and treatment is very effective.
However, if left untreated, the nerve damage can
result in crippling of hands and feet, paralysis, and
blindness.”
45
“As for the leper who has the infection, his
clothes shall be torn, and the hair of his head shall
be [a]uncovered, and he shall cover his mustache
and cry, ‘Unclean! Unclean!’ 46 He shall remain
unclean all the days during which he has the
infection; he is unclean. He shall live alone; his
dwelling shall be outside the camp.
LEVITICUS 13:45-46
“To the rabbis,
the cure of a leper was as difficult as
raising a person from the dead.”

The phrase "made you well" or "made thee
whole" in other translations is Greek sozo, the
word commonly translated "to save." Sozo in this
context means "to preserve or rescue from natural
dangers and afflictions, 'save, keep from harm,
preserve, rescue,' specifically, 'safe or free from
disease.' "

outsiders are sometimes more responsive
than God's own people.”
