CHARACTERS
 MR. DUFFY

Mr. Duffy is the main character of this story. He works as a bank

cashier while living a predictable , unadventurous and organized life.
He enjoys watching opera concert and one day, he coincidentally
meets Mrs. Sinico. As they become close his hard character is
softened.However, he finds out that Mrs. Sinico likes him,he
becomes uncomfortable because he knew very well that she was
already a married woman in the end he becomes uncomfortable
because he knew very well that she was already a married woman.In
the end he decides to bring their meetings to an end and doesn’t
hears a word from her until a few year later.
 Mrs. Emily Sinico
Mrs. Sinico is a woman who is married and has a daughter.In this
story her life is depressing with a husband that doesn’t get along
very well and come home very often.However,one day she attends to
a concert with her daughter.She meets another audience named Mr.
Duffy and as they share interests in art,she becomes attracted to him.
She invites Mr. Duffy over to her house many times and after several
meetings,she finally portrays her feelings by touching his
cheek.When she is rejected she becomes depressed and starts
thinking.
 MR. Sinico
Mr. Sinico is the husband of Mrs. Sinico. He is a captain of merchant
ship and is rarely home. When he is home and sees her wife with Mr.
Duffy he oddly doesn’t mind. This could indicate at this time. Mr.
and Mrs. Sinico were already having some kind of personal issue
and not getting along.

 LITERAL COMPREHENSION
This story, "A painful case” is about a man named Mr. Duffy who attends a
concert one day and encounters a lady named Mrs. Sinico. As the two-share
interest in art, they become friends .Mr. Duffy thought that he’d finally made
a friends, but it was different for Mrs. Sinico. She didn’t think of him just as
a close friend and had feelings for him, Mrs. Sinico lightly touched Mr.
Duffy cheek. At that, moment Mr. Duffy finally met a mix of various
emotions,disgust,disappointment,uncomfortableness, and conclusion. From
that day on, he tried to avoid Mrs. SInico. But when he found not wanting to
see her at all, he called her out to stop contacting him.Four years later, Mr.
Duffy hears that Mrs. Sinico had died in a train accident. The news says that
the main cause of her death is a heart attack, before she got hit by the train.
Although her death was nobody’s fault. Duffy felt guilty for death and
realized that he’d just lost his one chance in loving anyone. We think that the
title of this story is called ‘A Painful case’ because Mr. Duffy pushed away a
chance of being loved and felt pain when he lost forever in the end
