MACMILLAN
Macmillan was Conservative prime minister of Britain from 1957
to 1963, and presided over a time of prosperity and the easing of
Cold War tensions.
Biography
 His full name was Maurice Harold Macmillan

 He was born in London, on 10th February, 1894.

 His father was publisher (Maurice Crawford Macmillan) and


mother was artist (Helen Artie Tarleton Belles)

 He had 2 brothers – Daniel and Arthur

 He studied at Oxford University

 He served in both World Wars


Marriage
 Macmillan married Lady Dorothy Cavendish, the daughter of
9th Duke of Devonshire on April 21, 1920

The Macmillans had four children:


 Maurice Macmillan (1921–1984)

 Lady Caroline Faber (1923–2016)

 Lady Catherine Amery (1926–1991)

 Sarah Heath (1930–1970)

Lady Dorothy died on 21 May 1966, aged 65, after 46 years of


marriage.

Eileen O'Casey is the woman who might have replaced Lady


Dorothy after her death.
Political Career
 He became Conservative member of parliament for
Stockton-on-Tees in 1924, losing his seat in 1929 but
regaining it in 1931

 Macmillan was transformed from an awkward and aloof


maverick into a polished and self-confident executive

Between 1951 - 1954 Macmillan served as minister of


housing, and then became, minister of defence, foreign
secretary and chancellor of the exchequer.

 Macmillan proved to be a beneficiary of the crisis, which


forced the resignation of the prime minister
