Nuclear Energy

Nuclear reactions occur when atoms of one species of

chemical element are transformed into atoms of another
species by nuclear change. This could occur in two
ways:
1. Fission or the splitting of heavy atoms into lighter
atoms
2. Fusion or the combination of two light atoms to form
a heavier atom
Nuclear Energy
Both fission and fusion create heat energy called nuclear
energy. Fission occurs when an atom is hit by a neutron,
causing it to release heat and fragments that form new and
lighter elements and to eject neutron from the nucleus.
These neutrons Strike other fissionable atoms, creating a
continuous chain reaction. If this nuclear reaction occurs in a
controlled manner, it could provide usable energy.
Nuclear Energy
Some Of the radioactive elements that decay are uranium-235,
uranium-238, and thorium-232 These elements can be mined and used
to obtain nuclear energy by fission. Uranium is found in mineral
pitchblende, and thorium is present in monazite. Natural uranium is
composed of 90.3% ²³⁸U and 0.7% ²³⁵U. The least abundant ²³⁵U is
more fissile (can sustain nuclear fission chain read And therefore
generate more energy. To be useful as fuel or reactor grade,²³⁵U
concentration must be enriched to about 3% to 5%.
Nuclear Energy
There are two problems associated with
nuclear power plants. First, the fuel rod
should maintain a certain temperature;
otherwise, it could generate temperature high
enough to cause meltdown or explosion of
radioactive materials.
Nuclear Energy
The Bataan Nuclear Power Plant was built in
1976 in Morong, Bataan. However, because of
issues on safety, technology use, presence of
potential geologic hazards neat active faults and
volcanoes, and occurrence of nuclear plant
accidents such as the Three Mile Island accident
and Chernobyl disaster, it never became
operational.
