[note] Since it may be necessary to calculate in spherical and cylindrical coordinates, it is recommended
that you familiarize yourself with the spherical and cylindrical version of the operators and calculations

Electrodynamics – Explanation for frequent problems 4

4. Electromagnetic wave in materials • There are mainly three conditions. In these cases, it is
assumed that electromagnetic waves are incident on
the materials
- Good conductor : Griffith Chap. 9.4.1
- Bad conductor : Griffith Chap. 9.4.1
- Plasma or free electron gas : Jackson Chap 7.5

• The methods are different for the case of the conductor

and the case of plasma (or free electrons). Thus please
study both case

• For the conductor, the solution can be obtained from

Maxwell eqs. In the material.
• For the Plasma(or free electron gas), the solution can
be obtained from the equation of motion of charged
particles. And you will shold to find the dielectric
constant from the equation of motion

• Physical meaning is also important.

the vector potential using its definition

• Using of the Euler-Lagrange formula

2. Griffiths_Introduction to Quantum Mechanics (Chap. 1 ~ 8)
[note] The main textbook is Sakurai’s book, but it is little difficult and has unnecessary parts for DQE. Thus I
recommend to use Griffiths' book mainly, and also to use Sakurai’s book as a reference for notation and
supplementary material.

you familiarize yourself with the spherical and cylindrical version of the operators and calculations
