What Is Cough?
COUGH
Definition

Cough is not a disease but one of the


most common clinical signs or
symptoms of lung and airway disease.
Coughing is one way for the body to
clear the respiratory tract from mucus
or incoming foreign materials and
objects.
Causes Cough

 Mechanical stimuli, such as cigarette


smoke, dust, tumors
 There is a sudden change in temperature
 Chemical stimuli, such as gases and odors
 The presence of inflammation / infection
 Allergic reactions
Cough Symptoms
Symptoms that accompany cough are
generally caused by influenza. These
symptoms include a high fever
accompanied by stiff muscles,
sneezing, nasal congestion, and sore
throat. However, cough with phlegm
also occurs due to inflammation of the
lungs.
Cough Prevention
1. Wash hands
2. Don't touch the face
3. Do exercise regularly
4. Eat foods that contain phytochemicals
5. Do not smoke and stay away from
secondhand smoke
6. Avoid smoky fog environment.
Cough Treatment
 Drink lots of water. Fluids can help loosen phlegm
in the throat. Apart from plain water, warm drinks,
such as tea plus honey or ginger are also
recommended, gargling with salt water.
 Avoid substances that can cause irritation or
allergies, such as dust or smoke.
 Add more pillows while sleeping, so that the head
is more elevated.
 Take cough relievers
 Stop smoking
 Take cough suppressants
