QUESTION

Is baking
powder
necessary as
a baking
ingredient?
HYPOTHESIS

Baking powder is not necessary in cakes.


MATERIALS

 1 yellow cake recipe


 Ingredients for recipe
 Baking pans
 Handheld electric mixer
 Measuring cups and spoons
PROCEDURE

 Step 1 – Mix recipe ingredients and bake


Cake A as directed.
 Step 2 – Mix recipe ingredients for Cake B but OMIT the baking
powder and bake as directed.
 Step 3 - Allow cakes to cool, then remove from pans.
 Step 4 - Measure height difference.
 Step 5 - Taste cakes to determine any taste and texture differences.
 Step 6 - Record any differences.
RESULTS

Cake A rose properly and had a light, Cake B baked flat, and had a dense
springy texture to the crumb. texture similar to that of a cookie or
fudgy brownies.

CONCLUSION

Baking powder is a necessary


ingredient for baking (cakes especially)
that improves the taste and texture of
the crumb and allows the cake to rise.
