Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of this module you will be able to
• Recognize different type of numbers (natural, integer, rational and
irrational numbers) based on a criteria or a simple justification.
• Use proper interval and set notations and operations for
expressing a given set of numbers.
• Apply proper algebraic manipulations and operations for
simplifying an expression.
Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of this module you will be able to
• Find distance formula between two given points.
• Write the equation of a line if two points or a point and the slope is
known.
• Find the intersection of two given curves.
• Classify equation of curves such as circles, ellipses, hyperbolas
and parabolas.

02 Numerals
What are numerals?
Numerals are symbols, or combination of symbols which
describe a number. The most widely used numerals are the
Arabic numerals and the Roman numerals.

ARABIC NUMERALS ROMAN NUMERALS

simply the modification of the numbers which are written in
Hindu-Arabic number signs and Latin alphabet.
are written in Arabic digits.
Taken singly, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, I=1 V=5 X = 10 L=50
9 and in combination 20, 21, C = 100 D = 500 M = 1000

Types of Numbers
NATURAL NUMBERS INTEGERS

Natural numbers are all Integers include all whole
numbers 1, 2, 3, 4… They are numbers and their negative

FRACTIONS or RATIONAL NUMBERS
RATIONAL NUMBERS are ratio of 2 integers m and n where n is
not 0

Q = (m/n) where n is not = 0

FRACTIONS or RATIONAL NUMBERS
RATIONAL NUMBERS are ratio of 2 integers m and n where n is
not 0

Q = (m/n) where n is not = 0

We need rational numbers to describe

what happens when we split up the pizza.
To calculate the share of pizza , we must
use rational numbers!

1 slice of pizza in the above figure is 1/8
