objectives for the year. The specific
resources and activities we choose to
help learners achieve these objectives
are up to us, although Cambridge does
give many suggestions on the scheme.
TERM 1
UNIT 1A STORIES WITH FAMILIAR SETTINGS:
Use extracts from Classic Fiction to develop the following skills:
(4 weeks)

• Inference using explicit and implicit information.


• How context impacts readers understanding.
• Use of first person narration
• Understand viewpoint, distinguishing between narrator and author.
• Understand how paragraphs and chapters are structured and linked.
• Plan to write an extended story using classic fiction as a model for writing.
UNIT 1B BIOGRAPHY AND AUTOBIOGRAPHY:
Use biographical and autobiographical texts to develop the
following skills: (4 weeks)

• First and third person narration.


• Paragraphs, chapters and headings in biographical texts
• Features of journalistic style, biographies and autobiographies.
• Write a biographical report in journalistic style.
UNIT 1C PLAY BY A SIGNIFICANT WRITER:
Use a Shakespeare play to develop the following skills:
(2 weeks)

• Prepare and practise a short performance, thinking about


gesture and movement.
• Compare and evaluate their own performance.
TERM 2
UNIT 2A TRADITIONAL TALES
Use Traditional Tales and stories from other cultures to develop
the following skills: (4 weeks)

• Evoke a particular mood or atmosphere such as suspense.


• Make inferences using explicit and implicit information.
• Understand how paragraphs are structured and linked.
• Write a short story creating a particular atmosphere.
UNIT 2B ARGUMENT AND DISCUSSION
Use reports and non-fiction texts to develop the following skills:
(4 weeks)

• Identify features of balanced written arguments.


• Participate in a debate about a controversial issue.
• Argue a case in writing, developing points logically and
convincingly.
• Write a balanced report on a controversial issue.
UNIT 2C POEMS BY SIGNIFICANT POETS
Use famous poems to develop the following skills:
(2 weeks)

• Identify language and features of a poem.


• Explore how poets manipulate and play with words and their
sounds.
• Read and interpret poems in which meanings are implied or
multi-layered.
TERM 3
UNIT 3A STORIES BY SIGNIFICANT CHILDREN’S AUTHORS
Use famous children’s stories to develop the following skills: (4 weeks)

• Understand narrative structure such as handling of time


• Summarise the events in a paragraph or passage.
• Understand how paragraphs are structured and linked.
• Plan to write a short story with events out of sequence.
• Use paragraphs to structure a story.
UNIT 3B NON-CHRONOLOGICAL REPORTS
Use different information texts to develop the following skills:
(4 weeks)

• Recognise key features of non-chronological reports.


• Recognise the language, style and impact of a range of non-fiction
writing.
• Do research before writing non-chronological texts linked to work in
other subjects.
• Summarise information.
• Reflect on variations in speech and appropriate use of standard English.
• Use paragraphs to structure a text.
UNIT 3C POEMS BY SIGNIFICANT AUTHORS
Use famous poems to develop the following skills:

• Explore how poets manipulate and play with words and their
sounds.
• Read and interpret poems in which meanings are implied or
