 Unit 1:
PRESENT OF VERB TO BE

PRESENT OF VERB TO BE
It is used to say something about a person, thing, state, age, feelings or
emotions; to show a permanent or temporary quality, state, job, etc. The
verb to be is the most important verb in the English language. It is an
irregular verb. In the simple present tense, to be is conjugated as follows:

Examples:

He is rich.
It's cold today.
I'm Andy.
That's all for now.
These books are not expensive.
My sister is 20 years old.
Are you hungry?
USE OF VERB TO BE 1
We use the verb Be before nouns, profession, etc.

I am an engineer.
Examples:
He is an astronaut

He is a musician.
We are bakers.

They are aliens.

She is a dentist.
USE OF VERB TO BE 2
We use the verb Be before adjectives:

I am sad. Examples:
It is black.

We are hungry.
My friend is scared.

He is thirsty
Lisa is beautiful.
USE OF VERB TO BE 3
We use the verb Be before prepositions:

They are in the shower.

My mom is in the house
Examples:

I am from Spain
Alicia is from Japan.

The cat is under the chair.

The boy is in front of the park
CONTRACTIONS
In a contraction, an apostrophe (')
replaces a letter. Negative
QUESTIONS
The verb Be comes before the subject in questions.
WH QUESTIONS
Wh-questions begin with what, when, where, who, whom,
which, whose, why and how. We use them to ask for information. The
answer cannot be yes or no:

A:Where’s the coffee

machine?
A:When do you finish
B:It’s in the room next to the college?
reception.
B:Next year.
A:How old is your dog?
A:Who is your favourite
B:She’s about five. I’m not actor?
