Solve 5x + 7 < 3(x + 1)

Firstly, multiply through on the right-hand side, and then solve as usual:
5x + 7 < 3(x + 1)
5x + 7 < 3x + 3
2x + 7 < 3
2x < –4
x < –2

Setelah 9 bulan uang tabungan Susi di koperasi berjumlah Rp 3.815.000. Koperasi memberi jasa simpanan
berupa bunga 12% per tahun. Berapa tabungan awal Susi di koperasi
Penyelesaian: Ingat rumusnya:
Missal: Bunga = a . p . M
Tabungan awal = M Bunga = ¾ . 12% . M
Persentase = p Bunga = 9M%
Tahun = a Bunga = 9M/100
Karena bunganya pertahun maka: Tabungan akhir = bunga + M
3.815.000 = (9M/100) + M
9 bulan = 9/12 tahun = ¾ tahun, jadi:
3.815.000 = (9M/100) + (100M/100)
a = ¾ tahun 3.815.000 = 109M/100
M = 3.815.000 . 100/109
M = 3.500.000
Solve 10 < 3x + 4 < 19
This is what is called a "compound inequality". It works just like regular inequalities, except that it has three
"sides". So, for instance, when it go to subtract the 4, It should to subtract it from all three "sides".
10 < 3x + 4 < 19
6 < 3x < 15
2 < x < 5

Solve (2x – 3)/4  < 2
First, multiply through by 4. Since the "4" is positive, it doesn't have to flip the inequality sign:
(2x – 3)
/4   < 2
(4) × (2x – 3)/4  < (4)(2)
2x – 3 < 8
2x < 11
x < 11/2  = 5.5
Solve 3(x – 2) + 4 > 2(2x – 3)

Firstly, multiply through and simplify; then solve:

3(x – 2) + 4 > 2(2x – 3) Why did I move the "3x" over to the right-hand side (to get to the line marked with a
3x – 6 + 4 > 4x – 6 star), instead of moving the "4x" to the left-hand side? Because by moving the smaller
3x – 2 > 4x – 6 term, I was able to avoid having a negative coefficient on the variable, and therefore I
–2 > x – 6            (*) was able to avoid having to remember to flip the inequality when I divided off that
4 > x coefficient. I find it simpler to work this way; I make fewer errors. But it's just a matter
x < 4 of taste.

Sam and Alex play in the same soccer team.

Last Saturday Alex scored 3 more goals than Sam, but together they scored less than 9 goals.
What are the possible number of goals Alex scored? Check:
Assign Letters: •When S = 0, then A = 3 and S + A = 3, and 3
•the number of goals Alex scored: A < 9 is correct
•the number of goals Sam scored: S •When S = 1, then A = 4 and S + A = 5, and 5
We know that Alex scored 3 more goals than Sam did, so: A = S + 3 < 9 is correct
•When S = 2, then A = 5 and S + A = 7, and 7
And we know that together they scored less than 9 goals: S + A < 9
< 9 is correct
We are being asked for how many goals Alex might have scored: A •(But when S = 3, then A = 6 and S + A = 9,
SOLVE: Simplify:2S < 6 and 9 < 9 is incorrect)
Start with:S + A < 9 Divide both sides by 2:S < 3
A = S + 3, so:S + (S + 3) < 9 Sam scored less than 3 goals, which means that Sam could have scored 0, 1 or 2 goals.
Simplify:2S + 3 < 9 Alex scored 3 more goals than Sam did, so Alex could have scored 3, 4, or 5 goals.
Subtract 3 from both sides:2S < 9 − 3
