Midterm Review
Procedure
 Exam and Materials are available under “Course Units,
Assignments, Exams”; exam is on your own and
submitted via Blackboard.
 Scores are online now. Exam will be available at
1:30pm Tuesday, October 6 and closes 11:59 pm on
Friday, October 9.
Pieces Covered
 Schumann “Widmung” – art song
 Mozart, String Quartet K 499, Minuet (not Trio, just
opening minuet)
Prior to taking exam
 Study Scores
 Listen to Recordings
 Do preliminary analysis on your own – keys, cadences,
phrasing, etc.
 Figure out types of forms used in each example
Concepts to study
 From Chapter 2 – Cadence types, modulations
 From Chapter 3 – Phrasing concepts (motives,
sequence, sentence, phrase group, parallel and
contrasting periods, repeated phrases)
 From Chapter 4 – Extensions of phrases (anacrusis,
afterbeat, accompaniment lead-in, elongated upbeat,
interpolation, evaded cadence, elision, link)
More Concepts
 Chapter 5 – Introductory, Expository, Transitional,
Developmental and Parenthetical functions.
 Chapter 6 – One-part form, Simple Binary, Balanced
Binary, Rounded Binary (sectional and continuous
forms of each, as applicable)
 Chapter 7 – Simple Ternary, Compound Ternary, Large
Ternary Forms (sectional and continuous forms of each)

 The first 12 questions refer to the Schumann. They do


not refer to the Mozart AT ALL. Answer only for the
Schumann in the first 12 questions.
 The last 5 questions refer to the Mozart. They do not
refer to the Schumann AT ALL. Answer only about the
Mozart in the last 5 questions.
Taking the Exam
 Begin the exam when you have done a thorough
perusal of both movements.
 You will have two hours to complete your work.
 Choose “submit” rather than “save” when you complete
your work, or the exam will not go through.
 I want to see no evidence of collaborative work.
 Exam must be completed by Friday, October 9, 11:59

NOTE
 All Ternary Form Assignments up to this point will be
graded by NOON, Wednesday, October 7 in case you
want feedback on your work to this point before really
starting the midterm.
