LESSON 1

ISSUES AND CONCERNS ON PERSONAL

HEALTH
Let's find out!

◦ In this lesson, you will be able to describe personal health issues

and concern.
Good day everyone!!!
As a Grade 6 pupil, many of you are experiencing changes in your
body. That is because you are now approaching puberty. But what is
puberty? It is a period during which adolescents reach maturity and
became capable of reproduction. It is also the stage when your body
experiences so many changes. Because of these changes, many teenagers
are having issues and concerns about their personal health.

Come!!! Let's learn together about the different personal

health issues and concerns.
• Extreme thinness
associated with extreme
starvation
◦Astigmatism is a type
of refractive error in which
the eye  does not focus light
evenly on the retina. This
results in distorted or blurred
vision at any distance.
Far-sightedness, also known
as hypermetropia, is a condition
of the eye in which light is
focused behind, instead of on,
the retina. This results in close
objects appearing blurry, while
far objects may appear normal. As
the condition worsens, objects at
all distances may be blurry.
Near-sightedness, also known
as short-sightedness and myopia, is
an eye disorder where light focuses
in front of, instead of on,
the retina. This causes distant
objects to be blurry while close
objects appear normal.
Xerophthalmia is a medical condition
in which the eye fails to produce tears.
It may be caused by vitamin
A deficiency, which is sometimes used
to describe that condition, although
there may be other causes.
Strabismus is a
condition in which the
eyes do not properly
align with each other
when looking at an
object. The eye that is
focused on an object
can alternate.
Otitis externa, also
called swimmer's
ear, is inflammation of
the ear canal. It often
presents with ear pain,
swelling of the ear
canal, and
occasionally decreased
hearing.
Otitis media is a group of inflammatory
diseases of the middle ear. The two main types
are acute otitis media (AOM) and otitis
media with effusion (OME). AOM is
an infection of rapid onset that usually presents
with ear pain. OME is typically not associated
with symptoms. Occasionally a feeling of
fullness is described. It is defined as the
presence of non-infectious fluid in the middle
ear for more than three months. Chronic
suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is middle
ear inflammation that results in discharge from
the ear for more than three months.
A malocclusion is a misalignment or incorrect relation between
the teeth of the two dental arches when they approach each
other as the jaws close.
Gingivitis is a non-
destructive disease that
causes inflammation of
the gums. The most
common form of
gingivitis, and the most
common form
of periodontal
disease overall, is in
response to
bacterial biofilms (also
called plaque) that is
attached to tooth
surfaces,
termed plaque-induced
gingivitis.
Periodontitis, the gums can pull away from the tooth, bone can be lost,
and the teeth may loosen or fall out. Bad breath may also occur.
Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is a symptom in which a noticeably
unpleasant breath odor is present. It can result in anxiety among those
affected. It is also associated with depression and symptoms of obsessive-
compulsive disorder.
Scoliosis is a medical
condition in which a
person's spine has a
sideways curve. The
curve is usually "S"- or
"C"-shaped over three
dimensions. In some,
the degree of curve is
stable, while in others,
it increases over time.
Mild scoliosis does not
typically cause
problems, but severe
cases can interfere
with breathing.
Kyphosis is an abnormally excessive convex curvature of the spine as it
occurs in the thoracic and sacral regions.
Lordosis is the
normal inward lordotic
curvature of
the lumbar and cervical
regions of the
human spine. Lumbar
hyperlordosis is
excessive extension of the
lumbar region, and is
commonly called hollow
back, sway back, or saddle
back (after a similar
condition that affects
some horses).
Sunburn is a form
of radiation burn that
affects living tissue,
such as skin, that
results from an
overexposure
to ultraviolet (UV)
radiation, usually from
the Sun. Common
symptoms in humans
and other animals
include: red or
reddish skin that is
hot to the touch
or painful,
general fatigue, and
mild dizziness.
A blister is a small pocket
of body
fluid (lymph, serum, plasma,
blood, or pus) within
the upper layers of the skin,
typically caused by forceful
rubbing (friction), burning,
freezing, chemical exposure
or infection. Most blisters are
filled with a clear fluid, either
serum or plasma. However,
blisters can be filled with
blood (known as "blood
blisters") or with pus (for
instance, if they become
infected).
Corns and calluses are
thick, hardened layers
of skin that develop
when your skin tries to
protect itself against
friction and pressure.
They most often
develop on the feet and
toes or hands and
fingers. Corns and
calluses can be
unsightly.
Ingrown toenails
are a common
condition in which
the corner or side
of a toenail grows
into the soft flesh.
The result is pain,
redness, swelling
and, sometimes,
an infection.
Ingrown toenails
usually affect your
big toe.
Dandruff is a skin
condition that mainly
affects the scalp.
Symptoms include
flaking and
sometimes mild
itchiness. A more
severe form of the
condition, which
includes
inflammation of the
skin, is known
as seborrhoeic
dermatitis.
To find out if you fully understand the lesson, let's do the
following tasks.
Name Description
Having less body fat than what is optimally healthy
When the cornea is not curved evenly that blurs your vision at any distance.
An inflammation in the ear canal.
It is an inflammation of the gums caused by plaques.
The excessive inward curvatureof the spine.
Overexposure to Ultraviolet radiation, usually from the Sun.
A common condition in which the corner or side of a toenail grows into the soft flesh.

A skin condition that mainly affects the scalp.

A condition in which the eyes do not properly align with each other.
Sideways curvature of the spine.
Identify the personal health issues and concerns that may arise in the following
situations.

_______ 2. Camille doesn’t wash/rinses her hair thoroughly.
_______ 3. Bernard hates brushing his teeth after eating candies.
_______ 4. JLo worries a lot about her weight and skips meal every day.
_______ 5. Jonathan loves to swim. There are times when pool water goes inside his
ears.
_______ 6. Catherine uses her phone more than eight hours a day in the dark.
_______ 7. A lady always puts a lot of make-up on her face but neglects washing her
face at night.
_______ 8. Amy doesn’t observe proper trimming of her toenails.
_______ 9. Jack loves to play under the sun without any protection.
