Problem-1
The following is the age distribution of 1000 persons working in a large
industrial house:

Due to continuous losses, it is desired to bring down the strength to
30% of the present number according to the following schemes:
(1) To retrench 150 persons from the lower age groups and to absorb
the next 450 in other branches;
(2) To make 100 from the highest age groups to retire permanently, if
necessary.
Calculate the age limits of the persons retained and those to be
transferred to other departments. Find the average age of those
retained.
Problem-2
Income of employees in an organization are given below. Compute the
average income. Every employee belonging to top 25% of the earners is
required to pay 5% of his income to workers’ relief fund. Estimate the
contribution to this fund.

be 9.5 and 2.5 respectively. Later on, an additional observation became
available. This was 15 and was included in the original sample. Find the
