Progressivism
Progressivism is the conviction that teachings should revolve heavily around
students and their needs, rather than the instructor or specific content.
Referring to our textbook, the philosophy of progressivism is based of of
three main ideals:

- Curriculum that is student-oriented based off of interests.

- The relation of that curriculum to not only the interests of the student,
but also their cognitive, emotional, and consciousness abilities.
- Active learning, meaning students participate greatly in their learning.

Progressivism is also the advocacy for social reform. Teaching ideals about
how to improve our society starting early on is what will propel this nation
forward. Progressive ethics are often held to higher individual value after
education brings about enlightenment.
Summary
In all honesty I am not surprised Progressivism is my top philosophy. I have strong beliefs
that I feel assist my passion for teaching. While being an elementary school teacher I would
never insert my own beliefs directly into the classroom, my desire for a more tolerant and
equality-based society will undoubtedly shine through in the way I assist my students. My
mother has always stressed to me the importance of acceptance and to not be selfish. My
values are all encompassing rather than directly inward.

My lowest ranking is actually tied between Essentialism and Behaviorism. Both of these
philosophies have little appeal to me. Essentialism is quite opposite of Progressivism, as it
seeks a much more conservative approach to teaching. I believe that respect must be earned
rather than demanded. Without trying to sound radical, authority without proper maintenance
and reason should be questioned. Behaviorism seeks to control actions and demeanors while
outright denying free will. I do not want anything like that in my classroom.

I do believe in my heart of hearts that my own philosophy of Progressivism aligns well

with that of CCSD. I’ve never been put down for my own ideas during any of my years of
school. Each teacher I had truly wanted to help me, and they all cared about me as a person. It
is the inspiration of great teachers that solidified my choice of career.
