Induction Motor

Construction
Induction Motor
 There are basically two main parts in
induction motor
 Stator ( which is basically the field in case
of dc machines)
 Rotor ( which is basically the armature in
case of dc machines)
Stator
 The stator core is made up of laminations which
are made of silicon steel. This type of
construction reduces the iron losses and
hysteresis losses.
 Stator winding is either Delta or Star connected
 It is wound for definite number of poles
 Choice of number of poles depend on speed of
motor
Rotor
 There are basically two types of rotors
 Squirrel Cage Rotor
 Slip Ring or Wound Rotor
Squirrel Cage Rotor
 Core is made of laminations in which
copper bars are placed which are shorted
to end rings
 Making a cage like structure
 It is also called short circuit rotor
 There is no possibility of adding any
resistance to rotor.
Slip Ring or Wound Rotor
 Rotor is also wound in star or delta
 It is wound for same number of poles as
stator
 Rotor core is laminated and slotted.
