Unit 7A Unit objective

• Understand simple
separation techniques in
terms of the particle
model
LO: Understand how to

Lesson objective: 7a lesson 10

•Understand how to

solvent
LO: Understand how to

Learning challenges
• Level 4: Give names examples of solvents
• Level 5: Select appropriate solvents for
different uses.
• Level 6: Link the uses of solvents to their
properties

LO: Understand how to

choose the best solvent
A solvent is a……
• liquid in which something will dissolve.

• Water is called the universal solvent but not

everything will dissolve in it.

LO: Understand how to

choose the best solvent
Level 4: Give names examples of solvents

• Will water act as a solvent for nail polish?

• Will water act as a solvent for ball point pen ink
marks on your shirt?

• Use the acetone and alcohol and a cotton bud to

see which acts as a solvent for nail polish and ball
point pen ink.
• Stick the samples in your book and label them
with its suitable solvent.
LO: Understand how to
choose the best solvent
Level 5: Select appropriate solvents for different uses.

Use the
pictures to list
the
advantages
and
disadvantages
of using tar
for road
surfaces.
LO: Understand how to
choose the best solvent
Level 5: Select appropriate solvents for different uses.

• Tar stuck to
the paint of a
car is insoluble
in water and
difficult to
remove

Tar is soluble in acetone just like nail varnish. What

could happen if you try and remove the paint with
acetone? Answer in a full sentence in your book.
LO: Understand how to
choose the best solvent
Level 5: Select appropriate solvents for
different uses.
• Why would you not use alcohol to remove the
ink stain from this blouse? Think, pair, discuss

LO: Understand how to

choose the best solvent
Level 5: Select appropriate solvents for
different uses.
• The choice of solvents is very important and if
you use the wrong solvent you might damage
the fabric or dye.

LO: Understand how to

choose the best solvent
Level 6: Link the uses of solvents to their properties

• There are hazards involved in using solvents other

than water.
• What do the hazard symbols on the alcohol and
acetone tell us? Think, pair, discuss.
• Solvents can dissolve odours to make scented
products like perfume. Would you choose acetone
or alcohol as a solvent to make perfume?
• Answer in a full sentence and explain your answer.

LO: Understand how to

choose the best solvent
Level 6: Link the uses of solvents to their properties

• Alcohol evaporates easily, which is why

perfume or aftershave dries so quickly on your
skin. Liquids that evaporate quickly are called
volatile. This allows us to smell them but also
can make them more dangerous because they
are more flammable.

LO: Understand how to

choose the best solvent
Level 6: Link the uses of solvents to their
properties
• Dry cleaning uses a solvent called tetrachloroethene. The
clothes are washed in the solvent at 30 degrees celcius
before being tumble dried at 60 degrees celcius to
remove it. Dry cleaners recycle almost 100% of the
solvent they use.
• Explain using what you have learned in this unit:
• how tumble drying it removes the solvent, why they
cannot use water to dissolve all stains and why you think
they recycle the chemical instead of disposing of it in the
environment. (6mks)

Self assess
• Explain using what you have learned in this unit:
• how tumble drying it removes the solvent, why they cannot use
water to dissolve all stains and why you think they recycle the
chemical instead of disposing of it in the environment. (6mks)
• The solvent evaporates (1)
• At low temperatures (1)
• Because it is volatile (1)
• Some stains are insoluble in water(1)
• The chemical is flammable (1)
• And could damage the environment (1)

Objective Review: Peer assessed
Objective: Understand how to choose the best solvent Did they achieve the
objective (yes/no)?
Level 4: You have given named examples of solvents

Level 5: You have selected appropriate solvents for different uses.
