N IN
IRELAND
HISTORY
The celebration of Halloween
began in Ireland around the
year 100 AD.

At that time Halloween was a

pagan festival that the Celts
celebrated with the name of
"Samhain", an old Gaelic word that
means "the end of the harvest.“

Traditionally the festival was the

time when ancient pagan Celts
stored supplies and slaughtered
livestock to prepare for winter.
HISTORY
The Celts believed that on the night of
Samhain (Halloween), the spirits of the
dead would revisit the world of mortals,
so they lit large bonfires to drive away
evil spirits,
and the only way they will not
take them with them it was by
looking like them that they put
on scary masks and costumes.

Irish immigrants brought versions of this tradition with them

to North America, where it became very popular.
TRICK OR
TREAT
Is a traditional activity on Halloween.

In the evening 31 October, children dress in

costumes travel from house to house.

At each house they say trick or treat ?.

This means that they threaten to play a 'trick', or

joke, if the people in the house don't  give a candy
or money.
