Today’s Objectives:

➔ The students will recall effective strategies of the SIOP Model.

➔ The students will show their understanding of strategies of the SIOP

Model.

SIOP Strategies
➔ SIOP strategies include techniques, methods, and mental processes that enhance comprehension
for learning and retaining information.
➔ Students should be provided ample opportunities to use learning strategies, which have been
taught through explicit instruction.
➔ Teachers can further develop students’ strategic thinking by planning and asking higher-order
questions and requiring tasks that promote critical thinking.
➔ Teachers should consistently use scaffolding throughout a lesson and decrease support as
students acquire experience.
Features of SIOP Strategies
➔ Ample opportunities provided for students to use learning strategies.
➔ Scaffolding techniques should consistently be used to assist, and supporting
student understanding.
➔ A variety of questions or tasks that promote higher-order thinking skills.
Components of SIOP Strategies

➔ Components of SIOP strategies include rereading, note-taking,


organizing information, predicting, self-questioning, evaluating,
monitoring, clarifying, and summarizing.
➔ Explicit teaching and modeling of these strategies help students become
more strategic in their thinking and learning.
The Goal

➔ The overall goal is for students, especially ELLS, to


become more independent in self-monitoring their
own learning strategies.

Strategy #1- Think Aloud

➔ The teacher models thinking through concepts and problems by


verbalizing his or her explicit thinking with students.
Strategy #2- Prompting, Questioning &
Elaborating

➔ Prompt higher order thinking skills by questioning and asking students to


elaborate on new learning.

Strategy #3- I Wonder Chart
➔ Before Reading
◆ Brainstorm about the book, topic or material.
◆ Create a chart using who, what, when, where, why questions.
● “I wonder questions”
➔ After Reading
● Summarize what they have just read.
● Read each statement in the chart aloud to confirm whether
it is true or false.
● Write down answers to questions from I Wonder Chart if
they were found in reading material.

Strategy #4- Think, Pair, Share, Write

★ Pose a question or thought to the class.

★ Give students time to think about their answer and then have them write on a

card.

★ Share with a neighbor/shoulder buddy.

★ Have some students share with class.

Strategy #5- Round Robin White Board

★ Have students sit in small groups.

★ Give each group a white board (or sheet of chart paper.)

★ Each student will write down one thing that was learned in the lesson.

★ They pass the white board around and each person continues to write.

★ The group shares out with the class.

Strategy #6- Word Chain

★ This is an activity for summarizing.

○ The first student will write down one word that was used in during the

lesson.

○ Then they pass it to their neighbor and they will write another word starting

with the last letter from the previous word.

■ Ex. Lesson- Photosynthesis

● Sunshine, Earth, heat, temperature, ...
