Online Databases vs.

Search Engines

What's the Difference?

Which one is good for academic research?
Online Databases
• an organized collection of electronic, digitized
information that can be searched in a variety
of ways.
• include information from magazines, journals,
newspapers, and electronic books.
• has gone through the editorial process.
• information included is credible and reliable.
Search Engines
• Information on the web is not collected and
organized in any meaningful way
• it is a vast reservoir of articles, ads, propaganda,
opinions of every variety, full text books,
government documents, and so much more.
• allow you to search for information found on the
web using simple keywords, but they lack the
advanced search capabilities provide by most
databases.
• most information found on the web has not gone
through the editorial process - anyone can "publish"
whatever they like on the web.
• there is no guarantee that information found on the
web is credible or reliable.
