What is friction? 💫
Friction is the force that resists motion when the surface of
one object comes in contact with the surface of another.
🌠 frictional force opposes relative motion
what are the causes of friction?
the strength of the force of friction depends on two factors : how
hard the surfaces push together and the types of surfaces
involved
⭐ smooth surfaces have less friction ; bumpy surfaces have more
⭐Friction acts in a direction opposite to the direction of the
object’s motion
Static friction💎
🌠friction that acts on an object that is in rest
🌠static friction opposes impending motion
🌠 when there is no applied force , there is no static friction
🌠 once the object starts moving there is no longer static force
Sliding friction💎
🌟 occurs when two objects slide over each other
🌟 sliding friction is weaker than static friction that’s why it is easy to slide
an object.
🌟 sliding friction is also called as kinetic friction.
Rolling friction💎
🌠occurs when an object rolls along a surface
🌠The force resisting the motion of a rolling body on a surface is known
as rolling friction
🌠easier to overcome than sliding friction
Some examples
Strongest to weakest
☐static
☐sliding
☐rolling
Difference between static and kinetic

Static friction✨ kinetic friction✨
🌸 Static friction is the friction 🌸 Kinetic friction is the friction
present between two or more present between two or more
objects that are not moving with objects that are in motion with
respect to each other. respect to each other.
🌸 The magnitude of static friction 🌸 The magnitude of the kinetic
is greater due to the greater value friction is comparatively lesser
of its coefficient due to the low value of its
coefficient
🌸The equation representing static 🌸The equation representing
friction is given by: kinetic friction is given by:
Fs max = µs η Fk= μk η
• Fs is the force of static friction • Fk is the force of kinetic
• µs is the coefficient of static friction
friction
• μk is the coefficient of kinetic
• η is the normal force friction
• Fs max is the maximum force of • η is the normal force
static friction
Advantages and disadvantages of
friction
Advantages ✨ Disadvantages ✨
🌠Friction is responsible for many types 🌠 Friction produces unnecessary heat
of motion leading to the wastage of energy.

🌠 It helps us walk on the ground 🌠 The force of friction acts in the opposite
direction of motion, so friction slows down
🌠 Brakes in a car make use of friction to the motion of moving objects.
stop the car 🌠 Forest fires are caused due to the friction
🌠 Asteroids are burnt in the atmosphere between tree branches.
before reaching Earth due to friction. 🌠 A lot of money goes into preventing friction
and the usual wear and tear caused by it by
🌠 It helps in the generation of heat when
using techniques like greasing and oiling.
