Global burden of malaria
• Every year, 300-500 million people affected
• 90% of these in sub-sahara Africa (SSA)
• 1.5 -3million people die every year
• 85% in SSA)
• Malaria kills in 1 year what Aids/HIV kills in 15 years.
• Malaria is probably the only disease that can be treated
in 3 days.
• Yet it kills millions every year
• vulnerable grps are pregnant women & children < 5
years.
Malaria in pregnancy (double –trouble)

• Is an obstetric, social and medical problem.


• Requires a multidisciplinary & multidimensional
approach.
• Recognized Public Health problem world wide,(>80% in
SSA/)
• Malaria in pregnancy tends to have a more a typical
presentation (due to changes of pregnancy)
• Complications are more in pregnant women
• 20-40% all babies born may have LBW.
Who is at Greater Risk
• Extreme ages, ,<19 years/young ones
• Low socio-economic status
• Prime gravidas
• HIV positive
• Low maternal weight (<50kg)
• Mothers in 2nd trimester of pregnancy
• High endemic areas.
Complications of malaria in pregnancy

Effects to the fetus/baby

• Intra uterine demise (IUFD)


• IUGR
• Fetal distress
• LBW
• Poor mental development of the newborn
• Congenital malaria? (<5%)
• Perinatal deaths
• Still births

• Worsens maternal dx eg anaemia,cardiac, liver dx etc
