Crafts of
Luzon
(Lowlands and Highlands)
Arts is a part of the life of the indigenous people
of the Philippines. This is shown in the things that
they used every day which are rich in traditional
colors or patterns. These art forms reflect their
tribal background.

The craftmanship of people from a local area


that shows their everyday life as they are handed
down from one generation to another is folk arts.
The arts and crafts of the highlands and lowlands
of Luzon is composed of weaving in which they
used pinya cloth to be woven into tapestries, and
other garments.
Weaving is popular among tribal
native Filipino. They are using fibers
from abaca, pineapple, cotton and
bark cloth to produce cloth rugs,
baskets and hats. Basket making used
for storage food, hunting, transport
grain, to catch, store fish. Natural
fibers like rattan are used as
materials.
• Nipis – Filipino uses fabric called nipis to weave
white clothing. These were weaved with decorative,
flower designs.
• Buri – considered stronger ang
cooler
• Iloco/Inabel fabric – made from cotton that undergoes the pain of
taking or beating of the cotton balls using bamboo sticks to separate
the seeds during the initial stage.

commercial purposes
• Jusi – is a fine transparent fabric woven from sick and piña
threads which originated during the Spanish colonial period
Native Filipinos created
ceramic jars to hold their dead
relatives and loved ones.
Pottery is also part of their
culture as their water vessels,
plates and cups. Many tribal
people wear woven hats for
protection against the strong heat
of the sun. the farmers of the
Bontoc region wear the traditional
straw hats called salakot.

• Bahag – is a loincloth that was
commonly used throughout the
Philippines before the arrival European

indigenous tribes of the Philippines today,
most notably Cordilleras in Northern
Luzon
• Banig – a hand woven mat in the Philippines
usually for sleeping and sitting. It is Made of buri.
