Three Readings on Sundays and
Feast Days/ Liturgy of the Word
1.First Reading- taken from the
Old Testament, during Easter and
Acts of the Apostles.
After the reader proclaimed the
word of God in the First Reading,
he says, “The Word of the Lord”
We respond by saying, Thanks be
to God.”
Followed by the
Responsorial Psalm taken
from the book of Psalms. The
Psalms are either read or
sung.
On Sundays, the Responsorial Psalm is
followed by the Second Reading.

2. Second Reading- taken from the letters

of Saint Paul and other Apostles.

We again respond by saying “Thanks be to

God” when the reader says “The Word of
the Lord”
3. Gospel- the most important part of the
Readings is the Gospel taken from the book
of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. This is
the most important of the readings because it
tells us of the life, ministry, and words of our
Lord Jesus Christ. This is the reason why we
stand when we listen to it.
Our response after the Gospel has
been read is “Praise to you, Lord
Jesus Christ.
