mIsland Hopping was a specific
strategy of the allies, jumping
around avoiding enemy
strongholds.
mThe U.S. and MacArthur return
to the Philippines. Following
the battle over the Philippines
the Japanese were badly beaten,
and retreating backwards.
mThe Battles of Iwo Jima, and
Okinawa, were fights over some
very small areas, but the results
were some of the bloodiest in
World War 2, for the Americans.
mFollowing the defeat of
Japanese forces at these small
islands, the opening for the
invasion of Japan had now
taken place.
 mFighting on the Islands of Okinawa, and Iwo
Jima was fierce and led to some of the largest
losses of American lives in WW2.
mEx. In the fight for the Philippines 110,000
American Soldiers were involved in the fight
against approximately 25,000 Japanese Soldiers.
This was the same amount of casualties (deaths)
that the U.S. suffered during the battle.
mThe American and British forces took on major
casualties, what became evident was that
Japanese forces would not surrender to the
United States.
mAmericans now had a opening for the invasion of Japan.
A decision now needed to be made. With the invention of
the ´Atomic Bomb,µ the U.S. had a weapon that would
certainly bring a Japanese surrender. What to Do?
mOne obvious argument was to drop the bomb, and this
would bring the eventual surrender of Japan.
mThe other argument was to give Japan a warning,
America should notify Japan when the bomb would be
dropped. This would lead to a Japanese surrender and
the United States would not have to set a new standard
for warfare.
mThe final argument was to invade Japan by ground and
slowly take apart Japanese forces. The U.S. forces could
use the surrounding Japanese Islands to initiate an attack
that would eventually lead to a Japanese surrender.
