So you
have a
basic idea,
now you
have to

Method of Controlled Convergence

• Phase I
1. The PDS shall govern all design solutions
2. Sketch all design solutions to the same level of detail (Lit
review)
3. Decision matrix time (- + S, or weighted) – ensure you select the
correct criteria and datum for evaluation.
4. Repeat the process until you arrive at a BASELINE!
Detailed Design

Value Engineering – cost reduction

DFM – Design for Manufacturability, all about reduction
Detailed Analysis – FEA, optimization, take out weight
Weight reduction – materials, manufacturing processes, analysis
Production Drawings – CAD
Detailed Design

• Start with your Selected Concept – based on PDS

• Consider integration issues, volumes, interferance, kinematics, growth
• How will it be manufactured?
• Think sub-assemblies
• How can I simplify the design
• How do other industries/competitors do it?
• Can I remove that component/part?
