Module Goal
Objectives:
Students will be looking at collaboration art

Standards:
Create:
VA.Cr1.A: Formulate and develop creative approaches to art-making.
Collaboration
What does collaboration mean to you?
What comes to mind when you hear the word collaboration?
Do you know any examples of collaboration?
Collaboration
Collaboration:
the action of working with someone to produce or create something.
Collaboration
Examples of collaboration in different industries:
Collaboration
Did you know it took an entire team of
people and nine months to finish Elsa’s
ice castle in Frozen?

Animators often work in teams where you

have storyboard artists, character
designers, and more all working on the
same project.
Fresco
Collaboration in the arts is almost as old
as art itself.
Frescos are a type of mural painting.
There are three types of frescos.

Buon Fresco: A buon fresco involves

painting on wet lime or plaster.
Fresco Secco: Fresco secco uses dry
plaster, but requires a medium to act as
a glue and does not produce as vibrant
hues.
Mezzo Fresco: A middle ground where
you use mostly dry plaster.
Buon Fresco
Buon Fresco was a very picky
method. If the plaster dried
before it got painted, the next
day the artist would have to
chip away the unpainted work
and re-plaster it all.

It was also difficult to correct

mistakes unless the plaster was
chipped away and relaid fresh.
Buon Fresco
Because of the nature of the buon
fresco, it wasn’t uncommon for a master
artist to lay out a sketch and then a
team of apprentices or students to
apply the plaster so it could be done
more quickly.

This helped them cover large spaces

faster, as in ancient Mesopotamia and
other regions, frescos were a primary
form of decoration.
Leonardo da Vinci
In the Renaissance, it was common for
artists to take on apprentices.

Leonardo da Vinci started out as

Verrocchio’s apprentice and would
help him finish his paintings.

Can you tell which parts of this artwork

were done by different people?
Leonardo da Vinci
The left was done by Verrocchio

The right was done by Leonardo.

Can you see the differences in

style?

Does the painting still work even

though the figures are stylized
differently?
Artists who’ve collaborated
Andy Warhol and Jean Michel Basquiat

Which part do you think each artist worked on?

Artists who’ve collaborated
Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg

Two abstract expressionist artists who used

commonplace items in their works and
helped pave the way for pop art by erasing
the differences between fine art and
popular culture.
Artists who’ve collaborated
Pablo Picasso and Gjon Mili: Painting with Pure
Light

In this, Mili acted as the photographer,

experimenting with a technique of ‘drawing with
light’ and Picasso ‘drew’ using the light creating
the figure you see in the picture to the right.

Not only is this one a collaboration of artists, but it

also crosses the boundary of photography and
painting and in a creative way.
Where do we go?
What do we have to learn from collaborating with others?
What can we gain from working with people who have different styles,
backgrounds and preferences than ours?
What can we learn from people who think differently and practice
differently than us?
Where would we be if everyone always worked individually?
Collaboration
You will be working collaboratively to create an art piece with another student!
