In 1766, this French botanist and explorer
became the first woman to go around the world,
but in order to do so she had to disguise herself
as a man. At that time, women could not get on
board ships of the navy for which they changed
their name, dressed as a man and sailed
throughout the entire length and breadth of the
Jeanne Baret was born July 27, 1740 in a small
town in French Burgundy. He spent the first years
of his life on his father's farm. When he died in
1762, she became the governess of the son of the
widower Dr. Philibert Commerson
Jeanne Baret joined the expedition
disguised as a man, calling herself Jean
Baret. He enlisted as an assistant to the
expedition's naturalist, Philibert
Commerson, shortly before the
Bougainville ships sailed from France.
According to Bougainville's account,
Baret was an expert in botany.
